Intestinal helminthic infections in Lake Zway Islands, Central Ethiopia

A survey of intestinal helminths using Ritchie's concentration method was conducted in Tulu-gudu, Tedecha and Funduro Islands of Lake Zway, about 160 km south of Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. 506 of the 1022 inhabitants of the islands were examined and 286 (56.7%) had one or more helminths. The species found were Trichuris trichiura (in 33.8%), Strongyloides stercoralis (13.8%), Taenia spp. (6.9%), Ascaris lumbricoides (4.1%), Hymenolepis spp. (3.5%), Enterobius vermicularis (1.7%), Fasciola spp. (1.4%) and hookworms (<1%). The prevalence of T. trichiura (46.2%) and S. stercoralis (17.0%) was significantly higher in Tulu-gudu than in the other 2 islands (24.0% and 11.3% for the 2 parasites respectively).
