The leukocytic reaction in experimental candidiasis in mice

Changes in the composition of the blood cells in mice were studied after intravenous injection of living Candida albicans cells and somatic and cell wall preparations obtained by ultrasonic disintegration of the cells. A common property of all the antigens was induction to marked leucocytosis and granulocytosis, although the intensity of the reaction differed depending on the antigen used. All the antigens induced marked lymphopaenia lasting until the end of the observation period (31 days), especially after injection of living C. albicans cells. A fairly pronounced reaction of reticulum cells was also observed, especially in the group of mice injected with the somatic preparation. A tendency to increase in the number of monocytes was also noted. Highest mortality was observed in the group of mice injected with living C.
