Oral candidiasis as a marker for esophageal candidiasis in the acquired immunodeficiency syndrome

A prospective evaluation of 10 patients with acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and oral candidosis was carried out to determine whether oral lesions were sufficient to indicate oesophageal involvement. Oesophageal candidosis was demonstrated endoscopically in all the patients. It is concluded that this approach should significantly decrease the number of endoscopic procedures required in patients with AIDS without jeopardizing their care.
