Some non-specific antigens such as S. faecalis, Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Proteus vulgaris, Escherichia coli (K12), Salmonella typhosa [S. typhi], Shigella shigae [S. dysenteriae], Mycobacterium tuberculosis (H37Ra) and M. kansasii, were used live or in heat-inactivated condition to induce immunity in mice against an i.v. challenge of Candida albicans. Heat-killed cultures of S. faecalis, E. coli (K12) and S. shiga were immunogenic i.p. and they conferred protection against C. albicans. Since S. faecalis showed best protection, it was fractionated into various constituents by enzymatic treatment. An RNA fraction isolated by phenol method conferred best protection. Immunogenic potency of this fraction was confirmed by s.c. and i.v. routes.
