Arginine, glutamic acid, histidine, leucine, isoleucine, methionine, threonine, tryptophan and valine were found to be essential for growth and lipase production of Str. faecalis 272; omission of any 1 of these from the synthetic medium [DSA 11, 84] gave a marked decline in growth (0.40-0.43, optical density) and lipase production (0.2-0.7 mu mol). However, alanine, glycine, lysine and serine stimulated lipase production, and aspartic acid, cystine, phenylalanine, proline and tyrosine were found to be non-essential for both growth and lipase production.
