Comparative studies of the course of mineral, metabolite, enzyme and hormone levels in blood serum ante partum in dairy cows with and without later retained placenta

Blood samples were taken from 1202 cows in late pregnancy in 21 brucellosis-free herds and the serum levels of Ca, inorganic P, urea, glucose, bilirubin, cortisol, progesterone, total oestrogens, AST and GLDH were determined. Eighty-five (7.07%) of these cows subsequently retained their placenta. Normally calving cows from the same herds, sampled at the same stage of pregnancy, served as controls. Cows that retained their placenta had higher urea, bilirubin and progesterone levels but lower cortisol and oestrogen levels than the controls.
