Injection of coli toxin into 8 cows resulted in falls in total serum calcium, ionized Ca and phosphate, but magnesium concentration remained unchanged. There was also fever, anorexia, rumen stasis, rapid, shallow breathing and recumbency. This indicated that toxaemia could cause parturient paresis.
