Studies on serum calcium, phosphorus & blood phosphatases in growing cross-bred dairy calves

Blood was collected weekly to 6 weeks and at 8 and 12 weeks old from 6 male dairy calves. They were given whole milk to 4 weeks old and then concentrate was gradually introduced depending on bodyweight. Serum Ca decreased gradually from 21.6 mg/100 ml during the first week of life to 10 mg/100 ml in week 12. Serum P increased from 1.92 mg/100 ml during the first week to a maximum of 11.7 mg/100 ml in week 5 and then decreased to 7.38 mg/100 ml in week 12. Serum acid phosphatase was constant, but alkaline phosphatase decreased from week 5, after the change in diet.
