A profile of intra-partum and post-partum aspects of ante-partum haemorrhage from Pumwani Maternity Hospital, Nairobi

Case notes of 23,084 mothers who delivered at Pumwani Maternity Hospital (P.M.H.) because 1st January and 31st October 1983 were screened. Out of the above cases considered, there were 48 patients with ante-partum haemorrhage giving an overall incidence of 0.2%. There were 27 cases of placenta-praevia with maximum occurrence in para 4, 18 cases of abruptio-placentae with peak incidence in para I patients. Only 3 cases were of indeterminate origin. Out of 21 babies born after placental-abruption, 71.43% weighed less than 2500 grams. Out of 27 babies born with placenta-praevia, 37.50% weighed less than 2500 grams whereas in 600 normal uncomplicated pregnancies arbitrarily selected, only 4.67% were of that weight. The incidence of foetal mortality was highest in cases of abruptio-placentae. According to the literature review, this is the first study on ante-partum haemorrhage in Kenya.
