Study of dermatophytoses in Punjabi population

A total of 325 cases of clinically diagnosed dermatophytoses were examined. Of these 102 were positive for fungi on direct microscopic examination and 101 cases were culture positive. Trichophyton spp. were isolated most frequently (96%), with T. rubrum the most commonly isolated species (80%). Tinea corporis was the prevalent clinical type (52%). Dermatophytosis was more common in males (71.2%). The hot, humid climate was thought to be important in the cause and exacerbation of fungal infection.
