A study of anemia among rural Punjabi children

Of 508 children less than 3 years old in 6 villages in the Punjab 417 had Hb values below 10 g/100 ml. Anaemia was seen in very young children and incidence and severity increased significantly with age. Hb values in pregnant women were low and it is considered that foetal storage and the nutritional supply of Fe and folic acid after birth were the main factors responsible for the anaemia in the children. Parasitic infestation was not a significant factor.Tablets of ferrous sulphate and folic acid were given for at least 2 months to 151 children with Hb values below 10 g/100 ml. Values rose above 10 g/100 ml in 26 but were still below 7 mg/100 ml in 14.
