Effect of two carbohydrate:lipid ratios of diets enterally fed to chronic alcoholics

A study of the effects of enterally feeding 14 malnourished hospitalized alcoholic patients, randomly assigned an amino acid diet containing carbohydrates (group 1) or carbohydrates and lipids (group 2) vs. a solid-food general hospital diet (group 3, controls) revealed no amino acid plasma level differences among the 3 groups, and no effects of energy sources on nitrogen, absorption, and digestibility were observed. Higher nitrogen absorption and digestiblity were observed for groups 1 and 2 than for group 3. The results indicate than the amino acid solution was well-utilized by the alcoholic patients with the energy sources not representing critical factors. (wz)
