In a double blind trial against placebo carbamazepine (Tegretol®) decreased dysphoric symptoms (=irritability) in chronic alcoholics from 3.71 points to 1.95 according to the rating scale used. Even if the difference is not statistically significant (0.30>P>0.20) the findings may confirm a clinical impression that carbamazepine is of value in the treatment of dysphoric symptoms in chronic alcoholics. There was a certain correlation between such symptoms and signs of brain damage in alcoholic patients, and this might have some relation to the effect.
