Warburg's manometric method was used to check the action of estrone, estradiol and estriol on aerobic and anaerobic glycolysis of placental respiration. Estrogen concentrations of 10-4 M reduced O2 consumption and increased aerobic glycolysis. Such reduction of O2 consumption was most strongly pronounced in connection with estradiol, while the strongest rise in aerobic glycolysis took place in the wake of estradiol and estrone. Estrogen action upon anaerobic glycolysis was variable, with the latter remaining unchanged by estradiol, reduced in response to estriol and slightly increased by estrone.
