In this review, consideration is focussed exclusively on aspects of oestrogens and the early embryo up to days 5-6 post coitum in rodents and on the expanded blastocyst in farm animals. In particular, the potential embryonic steroidogenic abilities, the mode of oestrogen uptake, the effects of oestrogen on various levels of embryonic metabolism, and the potential physiological functions of oestrogens are discussed.
