Pregnancy in 10 Welsh Mountain Pony mares was followed from the 100th to 200th day by serial rectal palpation and urine tests. The accuracy of three methods of detecting urinary oestrogens was determined. The Kober method proved reliable beyond the 140th day of pregnancy but was cumbersome and time consuming. The Lunaas method, as described by Lyngset, was unreliable and difficult to interpret. The Cuboni method, for which a simplified technique is described, was reliable beyond 150 days.
