Staphylococcal strains were isolated from two outbreaks of staphylococcal infection and from sporadic cases in two flocks of ducks kept under intensive conditions. Three groups of staphylococcal strains were identified. Two of these were S. aureus and could not be assigned to any of the known host-specific varieties. They produced crystal violet types A and C. The third was S. intermedius. Ducks were experimentally inoculated with all three groups which, however, exhibited little or no pathogenicity. Several S. aureus strains of human origin and one S. aureus strain of chicken origin, on the other hand, exhibited considerable pathogenicity on experimental application to ducks. Reciprocal transmission of S. aureus strains between man and duck was unlikely to occur under natural conditions.
