Distribution of HLA antigens in patients with tuberculosis

The distribution pattern of HLA antigens was studied in 18 patients with destructive pulmonary tuberculosis diagnosed for the first time and with massive bacterial discharge, in 19 normal subjects, in blood relatives of the patients examined, and in 50 normal subjects who were matched to the patients as to age and sex. Tuberculosis patients had an increased frequency of the HLA-Bw49 antigen. The normal population mostly demonstrated Bw40, Bw21, Bw22 and Bw44 antigens. Before hypothesizing a possible association of tuberculosis with the HLA system, it will be necessary to analyze a far greater number of patients.
