Abnormal distribution of the histocompatibility antigens (HLA) in lousy patients

The frequencies of HLAs were studied in 31 children from the Ain Shams University Hospitals, Cairo, Egypt, infested with Pediculus capitis and in 14 adults infested with Pthirus pubis to evaluate their immune response. All patients were endoparasite-free as indicated by urine, stool and blood analysis, and clinical examination. A significant increase was found in HLA-A11 and -B5 in children with head louse infestation, and in HLA-A11, -B5 and -B27 in adults with pubic lice. The relationship between HLA antigens and parasitic infection is discussed.
