Effects of Na2SeO3 were studied on 76 anesthetized dogs. A single i.v. of 0.5 mg/kg caused a significant decrease of blood pressure, while 2 mg/kg caused a more obvious hypotensive effect. The heart rate was not influenced by 1 mg/kg but was decreased markedly by 2 mg/kg. The left ventricular work did not show marked changes after 1 mg/kg but was depressed after 2 mg/kg. I.v. 1.5 or 2.0 mg/kg diminished the carotid artery and femoral artery blood flows. No significant changes were seen in aortic blood flow and coronary sinus flow after i.v. 0.5, 1, 2 mg/kg. The pressor responses induced by hypoxia or by pituitrin could be lessened by Na2SeO3. The survival time of the mice under hypoxia was prolonged by pretreatment with i.p. Na2SeO3 0.2-1.5 mg/kg.
