Cysteine was shown to have a protective effect on the killing rate caused by cadmium (Cd) but no effect on the uptake of Cd in S. aureus 3719-. The addition of 254 X 10-3 mmol/1 of sodium selenite or more into the liquid growth medium increased the lag phase of growth of S. aureus 3719- as evaluated by the length of the lag phase of growth in the presence of Cd and varying amounts of sodium selenite. 534 X 10-6 mmol/1 of sodium selenite in the growth medium had no effect on the uptake of Cd in S. aureus.
