Non-starved and starved cells of S. aureus Smith (diffuse) were tested for their virulence for Porton white mice infected i.p. and retroorbitally. Starved cells were less virulent than the non-starved ones, despite the infection route. From the 5th-6th day after retroorbital infection, the numbers of dead mice were close in both groups. Reasons for the restitution of virulence in starved staphylococci are discussed.
