The visual evoked potentials (VEP) were recorded using laser speckle patterns. The stimulus of speckle pattern was given with a pattern appearance-disappearance mode. The VEP obtained with this method had similar properties to the previous VEP obtained by pattern appearance-disappearance mode. In some cases of cataractous eye the opacities were so dense and diffuse that they did not allow the interferometric evaluation visual acuity; whether or not the speckle pattern generated by diffusion with the lens opacity itself could be applied as the stimulus for obtaining the VEP was studied in these eyes. Apparently it is possible to obtain a reliable EVP and an assessment of visual function of the retinocortical system even in cases of mature cataract consisting of dense and diffuse opacity.
