Combined bacteriological and virological examinations of faeces from 66 dogs with acute diarrhoea and of organs and colonic contents from 38 dogs that had died after developing diarrhoea yielded parvovirus from 41 dogs, Campylobacter jejuni from three, and Salmonella (enteritidis, infantis, stanley and typhimurium) from five. Parvovirus occurred as mixed infection with C. jejuni, S. enteritidis or S. infantis in three dogs, and with both C. jejuni and S. typhimurium in a fourth. Vibrio-like organisms were isolated from 45% of dogs with diarrhoea and 70% of normal dogs. Haemolytic Escherichia coli was isolated from 20% of dogs with diarrhoea and 8.4% of normal dogs. Coronavirus was not isolated from diarrhoeic dogs but was isolated from faeces of three of the 23 healthy dogs, two of which yielded parvovirus.
