Lymphocytic thyroiditis in beagle dogs in a breeding colony: histological findings

During an 18-year period (1974-1991) lymphocytic thyroiditis was found in 8% of 2238 dogs in a Beagle breeding colony (8.5% of 1079 males and 7.6% of 1159 females). The thyroid glands of affected animals were, on average, 10.4% heavier in males and 21.0% in females. Histologically there were interstitial lymphocytic infiltrations and varying degrees of follicular damage. Lesions were not found in dogs of less than 9 months of age. The condition was suspected to be of autoimmune origin.
