Collagen and elastic fibers [from rats, calves, goats and sheep] were stained in cryostatic slices of various tissues with the MBTH [methyl-benzothiazol-2-on-hydrazone] reaction, specific for aldehyde groups. Depending on the source, collagen and elastin gave different colors, easy to distinguish. This simple technique could be useful to visualize cross-linking in vivo of these fibers and to explore their pathological alterations.
