Sarcoptid mites identified as Trixacarus caviae Fain, Hovell & Hyatt were found in skin scrapings taken in 1978 in California from 2 pet guinea-pigs with generalised skin lesions. Clinical signs included intense pruritus, widespread alopecia and hyperkeratosis. The lesions regressed following treatment with lime-sulfur diluted 1:40 in water and sponged over the whole body 6 times at intervals of 1 week.
