Effect of acute sodium chloride load on blood prostaglandin levels in healthy subjects and in patients with hypertension

Using a radioimmunological method the response of serum prostaglandins (PG) of series A (PG-A), E (PG-E) and F (PG-F) to i.v. infusion of 500 ml of 5% sodium chloride solution was examined in 20 healthy subjects and in 45 patients with hypertensive disease. The acute load with the salt caused a long-time lowering of the PG-E level and a short-time rise of the level of prostaglandin A-like substance (PG-AS). At the peak of salt diuresis a direct relationship between the blood level of PG-AS and the excretion of sodium was revealed and so was an inverse relationship between the PG-F/PG-E ratio and the Na excretion. The peculiarities of the PG response in healthy subjects and in the patients with hypertensive disease may be associated with the differences in the salt diuresis.
