Patients (22) with severe arterial hypertension (18 patients with essential hypertension, and 4 with symptomatic hypertension) were given 2 infusions each of PGE2 drop, enhanced diuresis and natriuresis during the administration of the solution. Of hypertensive patients, one third showed high BP sensitivity to PGE2 administration, while some patients with essential hypertension and all patients with symptomatic hypertension had moderate sensitivity. One day after PGE2 administration, PB was lower, and diurnal diuresis and natriuresis were higher than the respective preinfusion values. Following PGE2 infusion, the patients showed higher sensitivity to diuretics and .beta.-blocking agents, so that even small doses of those could produce a good hypotensive effect where higher doses had had no desired effect prior to PGE2 administration.
