Mastitis caused by teat-dipping error

The teats of 155 cows free from infection with Streptococcus agalactiae were mistakenly dipped in an undiluted iodophor product on 3 consecutive days. By the 4th day, 90% of teats showed severe thelitis with epithelial erosion around the orifice. Subsequently 60% of the cows developed clinical mastitis, nearly half of these in the 1st 5 days of the 35-day outbreak. Out of 170 cases, 53 were caused by coliforms, 29 by streptococci (other than S. agalactiae) and 27 by staphylococci; the number of acute cases caused by environmental organisms is noted.
