This case of clinical mastitis, which occurred in a 7-yr-old Arab-Barb mare approx. 1 month after foaling, was successfully treated by infusion of both mammary glands once with 14.2 g Terramycin (Pfizer oxytetracycline) and daily intramuscular injection of 1000 mg Terramycin for 5 days. A beta -haemolytic organism, identified by morphological and biochemical characteristics as Corynebacterium ovis, was isolated from milk in pure culture. The route of infection was uncertain, there being no evidence of current or previous infection of the lymphatic system.
