Postnatal plasma prostaglandin E (PGE) and PGF2 alpha values were compared in healthy premature infants, 7 given NaCl supplement and 7 not given supplement. Before the supplement was given, plasma PGE concentration was high in both groups, 111.0 plus or minus 30.6 and 106.8 plus or minus 25.5 pg/ml, respectively; without supplement it remained about the same throughout the 5 weeks of study, but with NaCl supplement it declined with age at a steady rate to a mean value of 45.3 plus or minus 10.5 pg/ml by the end of the fifth week; in the fifth week it was significantly higher in the group not given supplement. PGF2 alpha concentrations decreased progressively from initial values with age in both groups; with NaCl supplement the decrease in PGF2 alpha concentration was faster and by the end of the study was significantly lower in the infants given salt than in those who were not given salt.
