Effect of administration of hydrocortisone and dipyridamole (persantin) on plasma levels of prostaglandin E1 and F2 alpha in patients with myocardial infarction

The concentrations of PGE1 and PGF2alpha were determined in the plasma of patients in the initial stage of acute myocardial infarction (12 days) treated with various drug combinations. Three groups of patients were isolated: group I-22 cases treated by routine methods, mainly with nitrates, group II-18 cases receiving on the first day of the disease hydrocortisone 3-4g daily, group II.degree.-10 cases receiving dipyridamo (Persantin) 225 mg daily and nitrates during 12 days. All patients had a markedly increased concentration of plasma PGE1 and less evidently increased PGF2alpha during the first three days of infarction. No significant effect of these drugs was observed on the plasma levels of PGE1 and PGF2alpha. The shape of the curves demonstrating the changes in prostaglandin concentrations suggested that in patients treated with hydrocortisone or dipyridamole the level of PGE1 returned earlier to values approaching the normal ones (on the 6th day of the disease). The shape of the curves demonstrating PGF2alpha levels was independent of the type of treatment.
