Heparin selectively interacts with many enzymes and brings about significant changes in their activities. Due to its polyanionic nature, heparin binds to many cationic proteins. These interactions may be used as a basis for the purification of proteins by heparin-sepharose affinity chromatography. Recently, heparin-sepharose has been used extensively for the purification of enzymes, coagulation proteins, steroid receptors and protein synthesis factors.
