Two families of 6 and 5 individuals in Belo Horizonte, Brazil, became acutely infected with Schistosoma mansoni. Symptoms developed 20 to 60 days after exposure. The patients were treated at 55 and 77 days respectively after infection with a single oral dose of oxamniquine 20 mg/kg body-weight. Parasitological cure was obtained in 5 patients (45%) and the numbers of ova in the faeces of the other 6 patients were significantly reduced. These patients were treated again 10 months later and they were cured. No side effects were observed. Mice infected with strains from 3 of these patients were cured by a single dose of oxamniquine 100 mg/kg by mouth.
