Dogs at 2 kennels in Pennsylvania and in Maryland, USA, were examined for Capillaria plica eggs in their urine. Of the 71 and 56 dogs over 8 months old, 55 and 33, respectively, were positive. No eggs were passed by immature dogs but 13 of 16 dogs became positive by 8 months of age. The infection showed no age, breed or sex predilection. In infected dogs, haematuria, dysuria and pollakiuria developed without secondary bacterial cystitis. Histological examination of biopsy material revealed adult C. plica in the submucosa of the bladder and ureter where they induced a mild inflammatory reaction and submucosal oedema.
