Capillaria obsignata (Madsen 1945) in turkeys in Israel

In Israel, of 343 flocks of turkeys over 10 weeks old examined between November 1970 and April 1971, 81 (24%) were found to be infected with Capillari obsignata. Between April 1971 and July 1972, 105 (20%) of 510 flocks of turkeys of all ages were found to be similarly infected. After experimental infection of young turkeys, eggs first appeared in the faeces 21 days later. After being given 2,500 C. obsignata eggs, the birds passed liquid faeces, ate less and appeared depressed. A 2nd dose of eggs (10,000) caused more acute clinical signs. Methyridine at 200 mg/kg body-weight injected subcutaneously in the neck region of naturally infected turkeys gave good results.
