Induced cellulase production with reduction in lag period of cellulose production was observed by lactose pregrown cells of A. fumigatus M 216 in comparison to glucose pregrown cells. Insoluble cellulose (Sigma cell) induced the maximum cellulase production in induction medium. Increased cellular growth with decreased cellulase production was observed when culture growing on cellulose was supplemented with either cellobiose or glucose, indicating that conditions favoring growth through providing readily available C source does not stimulate cellulase production. Significant cellulase activity detected in the culture filtrate by cells growing on Sigma cell (0.5%) supplemented with glucose (0.1%) only when glucose disappeared from the medium, suggesting that regulation of cellulase production may in part be affected by catabolite repression.
