The effect of DDT, fenthion (organophosphorus compound) and Low's mixture (insect juvenile hormone analogue) on oviposition and development of eggs when these substances were applied on the females [of I. persulcatus] 2 days after bloodmeal termination was compared. Fenthion inhibited oviposition considerably; DDT inhibited oviposition only in large doses and in low doses caused egg death due to pathological embryogenesis. Low's mixture caused death of the eggs in early embryogenesis. The target of the lethal acaricide effect in these cases is not the engorged female but oocytes and eggs developing in its body and/or the mechanism responsible for oviposition. In the comparison of the acaricides' effect on engorged Ixodidae females fenthion seem preferable as its effect is more lethal than that of DDT. Insect juvenile hormone analogues exert a deferred action equal to the sublethal aftereffect of pesticides.
