Field studies on the population density of Ixodes persulcatus Schulze are carried out in the Soviet Union by dragging 'flags' either for a measured time or over a measured distance. Two indices of abundance are calculated, represented by the numbers of adult ticks caught on one flag in 1 h (ticks/flag-h) or in 1 km (ticks/flag-km). In 1972, the relation between the two indices was studied in southern taiga forest in the Udmurtskaya Republic. It was found that recorders covered about 2 km in 1 h when they chose their own route. Values for ticks/flag-h obtained in these circumstances can therefore be converted to ticks/flag-km by multiplying the former by 0.5. When, however, the recorders were required to follow predetermined routes, they took about 1.3 h to cover 1 km, whether the routes were marked out on the ground or not. Values for ticks/flag-h obtained in these circumstances can therefore be converted to ticks/flag-km by multiplying the former by 1.3. These conversion factors, though not precise, may be used to compare results expressed the two ways.
