Influenza virus hemagglutinin affinity for bentonite

Conditions for adsorption to and elution from bentonite of hemagglutinins of influenza viruses A2/Istra-10/69, B/USSR/69 and B1/Dushanbe/69 were determined. The hemagglutinins had a significant sorption capacity to bentonite at acid pH values (5.3-5.6) under conditions of using 0.25% bentonite in the mixture. None of the used eluents (0.14 M NaCl, 0.5 M phosphate buffer, 1.0 M Tris-buffer) caused an effective elution of the hemagglutinins from bentonite. At alkaline pH values (8.0-8.5) partial elution of hemagglutinins by 0.5 M phosphate buffer was recorded.
