Relative productivity of five selective plating agars for the recovery of Salmonella from selected food types

A study of 5 selective agars showed that none was satisfactory used singly or in pairs for detection of Salmonella spp. in any of 9 food types including milk chocolate; enrichment in tetrathionate broth followed by plating on bismuth sulphite agar was the single most effective means of recovery. For isolation of salmonellae from milk chocolate, any combination of 4 out of the 5 agars gave satisfactory results.
