The use of immunostimulants as adjuvant to conventional tumor treatment modalities is based largely on the concept that an increased level of immunological reactivity against neoplasia may be achieved by nonspecific stimulation of the immune system. A common denominator in the mode of action of these agents seems to be stimulation of the mononuclear phagocytic system. Macrophage activation was studied in mice following treatment with immunoadjuvants, i.e., Propionibacterium acnes, BCG and pyran copolymer.
