Mouse peritoneal macrophages stimulated in vivo by 4 activating agents were compared in their phagocytic activity, morphology and 2 enzyme activities believed to represent cytocidal mechanisms. In comparison to macrophages from non-stimulated animals, spreading and swelling were most pronounced in those from the levan- and Bru-Pel-treated mice. Acid phosphatase and peroxidase activities were most intense in cells from levan-treated animals. While treatment with levamisole and BCG had more effect than Bru-Pel on acid phosphatase activity, the opposite was true for peroxidase. Activation of macrophages apparently is a collective term for different phenomena.
