Identification of a new chicken alpha-globin structural gene by complementary DNA cloning

The gene reported was discovered by the complementary DNA cloning of globin mRNA sequences from 2- to 3-wk-old White Leghorn fowls that had been treated with phenylhydrazine. The gene codes for an alpha -subunit different from the alpha A and alpha D subunits normally found in the adult fowl, of which it does not appear to be an allelic form. Evidence was obtained that the gene was switched on by the stress of phenylhydrazine treatment.
