New solvent mixtures for thin-layer chromatography of aflatoxin M1

Using radial TLC on silica gel GHR plates, 20 different solvent systems were examined for their ability to separate aflatoxin M1 from interfering substances in milk. The solvent mixture hexane:light petroleum (b.p. 60-80 deg C):benzene:chloroform:acetone:acetonitrile:acetic acid (1:1:1:2:1:1:3) was chosen since it changed the colour of interfering substances from blue to pale green and also significantly improved the resolution and separation of aflatoxin M1.
