Values, expressed in trace amounts, >10 and >40% of total carbohydrates, are tabulated for sugars in human milk and 8 milk preparations. Lactose was the main sugar, then sucrose; maltose, glucose and fructose were sometimes present. Urine from infants given human milk or the infant feed contained 14 sugars expressed in <3, 3 to 6, 6 to 20 and >20 mg/100 ml; lactose, sucrose, fructose, glucose, galactose, fucose and psicose were usually present but maltose was absent, showing that maltase activity in the intestine was high.
