Histochemical tests for enzyme activities were performed on microfilariae from man and animals in Zaria, Nigeria. Microfilariae of Dirofilaria repens, Dipetalonema spp., Onchocerca volvulus (from skin snips), O. armillata, O. dukei, O. raillieti and Setaria spp. showed distinctive acid phosphatase activities and the staining patterns may aid the differentiation of microfilariae of different species within the same host. Activities of nicotinamide-dinucleotide-oxide reductase, leucine aminopeptidase and alkaline phosphatase were low. O. volvulus microfilariae from a nodule and microfilariae of a Dipetalonema sp. from a dog showed no staining reaction in any of the 4 tests.
