Preliminary studies on mutagenicity of saccharin by induction of dominant lethals

Preliminary studies on mutagenicity of the carcinogen saccharin were done in 2 strains of mice, C 17 and Swiss, by induction of dominant lethals. Fifty males and 300 females were used for this study. Data of fertile matings were evaluated from groups treated by the s.c. route. Results were statistically significant (giving P < 0.01 or P < 0.001) in the C 17 strain at 240 and 480 mg/kg body weight dose levels during the 2nd and 3rd wk of treatment. In the Swiss strain at 240 mg/kg body weight dose level, significant changes were induced only during the 3rd wk after treatment.
