Rats trained to eat once daily were injected intraperitoneally with [3H] valine. Protein synthesis in liver was estimated (see NAR 45, 5900) and protein degradation was also calculated. The latter rate decreased by 75% after a meal and plasma insulin increased 4-fold. The number and size of lysosomes in liver hepatocytes increased after a meal. This and studies with liver homogenates tend to substantiate the protein degradation rates calculated on the basis of compartmental analysis of liver amino acids.
